Durability

To test the durability of the drive, I performed a few simple “real world” tests. In the course of carrying such a small device around with you, there are bound to be mishaps where it gets dropped to the ground. I simulated this by repeatedly dropping the IronKey from about 5-1/2 feet on a variety of surfaces. I dropped it onto carpet, I dropped it onto tile flooring and I even dropped it onto concrete.

I also tested the claims of the IronKey being waterproof by placing it in a class of water for 15 minutes. I can’t imagine how you would manage to accidentally submerse a USB drive into water for such a long period of time (except maybe if you left it in the washing machine, or if you ran into some flash flooding on your drive home from work), but this test gives a definitive answer as to whether the IronKey is truly waterproof.

The results of these tests show that the IronKey is as rugged and dependable as claimed by the manufacturer. Even after this battering, the drive fired right up after connecting it to my PC and I was able to access all of my data stored on the drive without any issues. That kind of peace of mind is very reassuring if you have a habit of breaking small electronic devices (such as your cell phone).

IronKey 4GB USB Flash Drive

The IronKey 4GB USB flash drive sets the standard for security in a USB flash drive. The designers clearly had in mind the goal of delivering the most robust security available, and the end product shows just how well this has been achieved. No other USB drive device on the market compares in terms of providing this level of data security.

With the ability to surf privately, provide secure online authentication (and remember your passwords too), withstand 5 foot drops and submersion in water and solid read and write performance --- the IronKey offers features not found on any other USB drive on the market. Anyone who places high value on protecting their privacy and their data will be extremely happy with the IronKey, as will anyone who wants a completely dependable portable storage device.

Can you put a price on data security? At a retail price of $149 for the 4GB version and $79 for the 1GB version, the IronKey team says you can.

Pros: Industry leading security features, accident-proof and waterproof, useful software, good read and write speeds.

Cons: Pricey

Rating: 4.5 out of 5
