For most people who are looking to overclock their CPUs, video cards and RAM to higher and higher speeds, the need for effective cooling solutions becomes extremely important. The two most common alternatives are air cooling and the more extreme choice of water cooling. Most people will choose air cooling based on the ease of installation and lower cost, as well as the desire to avoid any water leakage or maintenance issues.

Various cooling solutions are available today but the time tested usage of case fans is the simplest way to remove hot air from the inside of your computer case. Unfortunately adding case fans inevitably adds noise and a noisy computer in a quiet workplace is disruptive and distracting. Evercool has an interesting solution to the noise problem and it's called the RF-8 Rifling Fan.

Design

The Rifling Fan is an 80mm case fan that has a unique rifled fan housing that brings air in through the intake side, rifles it through the fan and out of the exhaust side with virtually no noise at all. The fan rotates at a fairly high speed with an airflow of 24.4 CFM at only 17dBA. The rifling design makes the air pressure stronger and creates high dissipation.

As far as heat dissipation goes, the fan is above par with others of its size. It is quieter than most 80mm fans and rivals the 120mm Noctua NF-P12 for its silence. Another interesting fact about the rifling fan is that it is actually a 92mm fan in an 80mm frame. It is, in reality, 12mm larger than other 80mm fans therefore allowing more airflow than other 80mm fans.

In the Box

Not a whole lot to say here - the fan comes with four screws and a Molex power adapter.

Installation and Usage

You can install the fan anywhere there is an open 80mm mount in your computer case. Many cases now only support 90 or 120mm fans so make sure you have the mount before you purchase the fan. Once you find a mounting location you just simply screw the fan to the mount and plug in the power to either a 4-pin fan header on the motherboard or into the Molex adapter making sure to plug a Molex lead from the power supply into the female end of the adapter.

It is worth mentioning that the computer this fan was installed into already has five other fans in it, so the ambient temperature of the interior of the case did not change noticeably. However, by replacing the other 80mm fan with the Rifling Fan the noise level dropped noticeably.

Once the fan is installed you may have to check it to make sure it is working because you won't hear it. The fan works as advertised and carries a lot of heat out of the case silently. When you install the Rifling Fan you're getting an extra 12mm of fan for the price of an 80mm fan; can't complain about that. There isn't much else to say here - it's just a great fan and is well worth the price of admission.

Pros: Near silent, cools effectively.

Cons: May not fit in some square 80mm fan mounts.
