Barnes & Noble, the largest brick-and-mortar bookseller in the U.S., announced today that it has launched its own digital book store.

Barnes & Noble announces its new digital book store

The eBookstore will allow customers to download and read more than 700,000 available titles on an array of different e-reader platforms. The software required to read the digital titles is free to download and is available for the iPhone, the iPod Touch, BlackBerry smartphones as well as Mac and PC versions.

Prices for the eBook titles range anywhere from .99 USD to 9.99 USD. To entice users to sign up, B&N is offering 6 eBook titles with anyone who downloads the software and signs up for a B&N website account. The 6 free titles include:

  • The Last of the Mohicans
  • Sense and Sensibility
  • Dracula
  • Pride and Prejudice
  • Little Women
  • Merriam-Webster's Pocket Dictionary

In addition, Barnes & Noble has revealed plans for its own e-reader device - the Plastic Logic eReader. The Plastic Logic device is not scheduled to go on sale until some time in 2010.

Many will remember the foray into eBooks that Barnes & Noble made in 2000, which caused a flurry of excitement in the tech industry. Despite some support from popular writers, including best-selling author Stephen King, the eBbook concept failed to catch on with the public.

Barnes & Noble ended it's first attempt at selling digital books in September 2003.
